Four-Time Olympic Cycling Coach Tests The Blackburn Motivator
Roger Young States "The Exerscape display is without a doubt the best of any other training
device!"
(Salt Lake City, UT July 12, 2000)-Roger Young, ex-Olympian and
professional cyclist, four-time Olympic Cycling Coach and President of In-Training, Inc.,
a sports promotions
and team management company, recently tested a pre-production version of the
Exerscape-equipped Blackburn Motivator Digital Interactive Training System.
The test group consisted of twelve riders within the target market of the
Motivator system: ages 20-65, income over $60,000 per year, most recreational riders who
ride 2-6 times/week, a couple of racers. According to Mr. Young, the results
showed "In my opinion the Exerscape is an important product
and should be on the market. It has two distinct features that answer two
important problems:
- The interactive display makes indoor training
interesting.
- It automatically saves training data.
Mr. Young continued, "The Exerscape display is without a doubt the best of any other training
device. The ability to inspire by putting the rider on a real trail or in a
real bike race is valuable. The ability to inspire riders is important in
keeping them riding longer and using the equipment more often."
Test rider comments included:
- "I love the fantasy of riding with pro riders and riding trails I'd have to
travel hundreds of miles to get to!"
- "I would definitely send training data out [to the National Team coach] if I
had one of these."
Mr. Young was also impressed with the ease of saving workout data:
"The greatest asset the Exerscape system provides for coaches is its ability
to auto-save and transmit data. Other systems like Polar, UltraCoach, SRM,
CompuTrainer, etc. have the ability to save and transmit data, but without
the automation. Speaking as a cycling coach with a little experience, the
auto feature is very very important since even elite riders are hard-pressed
to record, download, attach, and transmit files. Furthermore most other
systems gather too much data for the average coach or rider. Its like your
blender with all the buttons; how many do you really use? What's important is
how fast you go versus how hard you are working - and Exerscape retains that
data very well."
The Blackburn Motivator Digital Interactive Training System is the first product based on the new patented Exerscape™ variable
rate digital video technology invented by IXR Corp. Exerscape smoothly varies the video speed under the control of the wheel speed.
As you pedal faster, you go faster through the helmet cam video filmed on location. Self-selected
music, played from the Internet or a CD, enhances the Exerscape experience. Workout data is
saved for review. The Exerscape.com Web
database will enable users to share their workout information with coaches, rehabilitation
specialists, and others.
The Motivator will be shipping to Blackburn dealers on July 21, 2000, at a suggested retail price
of $399.
The included WebDVD will also contain over three hours of MPEG2 video filmed on location on and around the White Rim Trail
through Canyonlands National Park. Mr. Grissom captured the best parts of this world-famous
106-mile trail, riding a motorcycle behind Olympic medalist Susan DeMattei and professional mountain bike racer Carmen Richardson.
Visually stunning, the included Motivator DVD mentally transports users to Canyonlands as they ride through the desert cliff,
controlling their speed by pedaling faster or slower. Bonus footage includes 1999 US Professional Champion
Marty Jemison riding and racing in the Monterey area, and actual racing footage from the last
ten years of Paris-Roubaix Classic. Future versions may dynamically control the resistance level, based on the presence
of hills in the video. A growing library of
WebDVD titles will feature famous races and beautiful places.
IXR's breakthrough Exerscape™ technology provides an unmatched level of realism
by seamlessly varying the video rate of high-quality MPEG2 video. As Jim
Taylor, noted author of "DVD Demystified", stated, "Exerscape is an unparalleled
advancement of stunning simplicity." Originally conceived and invented by IXR
founder Bruce Ewert, Exerscape™ enables high-quality digital video speed to
be manipulated at will. Mr. Ewert, with his Speilbergian visage and varied
sporting and technologic background, notes "this is just the first step of
where we want to take users as we continue to push the frontiers of realistic
POV capture and user-driven displays, with real-time Internet connectivity!"
